The Anita Goodman Experience Bedazzles the Jewel Box Theater, 1/14/09

THEATER REVIEW
By now you've probably figured out that I love small venues. The Jewel Box Theater at the Rendezvous is one of my favorites.

In the 20s, when Belltown was the center of film distribution in Seattle, the Jewel Box Theater was, uh, the crown jewel. Original red foil paper still adorns the walls, a barely legal ladder leads to a projection-booth-turned-sound-room, and the place almost oozes ectoplasm from years and years of entertaining crowds. It seats around 75 people. You can almost imaging being seated next to Jimmy Stewart to screen a film, or listening to Seattle's own Mildred Bailey croon.

Enter, stage left, the Anita Goodman Experience.

Chaos reigns at this self-professed hour of conceptual comedy hosted by Anita Goodman. But the good kind of chaos. I am actually having trouble describing it.

Anita Goodman, the hostess, is the MC of the night and is fucking hilarious. She does a bunch of funny phone call bits and has great comedic timing. She's just plain funny.

But Anita is not alone. She's backed by DJ CassiePants, a sparkly, witty, smart, cute DJ sidekick. She can't seem to get all the cues right that night. But she is infinitely likable, so no one cares. And her makeup is great.

This night's episode also includes an appearance by Britney Spears' overgrown bush and Elvis (who really isn't dead), and a "drama teacher" attempting to give lessons to the entire troupe.

Brilliant.
